Rehmi lives and works just outside of town as a security guard for an apartment complex. He works the night shift, so a lot of his time is spent reading and just waiting at the gate. One day, while sitting with me, Rehmi told me he was running out of stuff to read. I took the opportunity to give him my Bible that was in my backpack and told him he could read it, encouraging him to start in the gospel of John. Then, I told him we could discuss it the next time we saw each other.
Typically, when I hand out a Bible, the person says he will read it but never does, so I wasn’t overly hopeful that Rehmi would follow my instructions. When I saw him again two weeks later, though, he ran up to me and shouted, “I read it!”
I told him that was great, and asked him which part of the New Testament he read.
He replied emphatically, “I read all of it….three times! I read the entire New Testament three times and am halfway through the fourth time now.”
I couldn’t believe it. He then told me he believed that Jesus was his Savior and wanted to be baptized. I kept thinking of Isaiah 55:11 that says, “So shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.”
Praise be to God! Please continue to pray for Rehmi and his wife, that they will grow and be lights in a dark place.
